PART 4 OF 6 · HEALTH-CRITICAL GUIDE

Lighting and heat that work together

Four non-negotiables make the basking system work: a warm-to-cool gradient, suitable linear UVB, correct positioning, and measurements that confirm conditions at dragon level.

GET THESE RIGHT FIRST

  • Make heat, bright light, and UVB overlap at the main basking area.
  • Create a warm-to-cool gradient with genuine shade.
  • Follow the exact fixture, lamp, obstruction, and distance guidance.
  • Measure conditions, use a consistent timer, and provide darkness at night.

The three-part basking system

A bearded dragon basks to warm up while receiving bright visible light and UVB. The basking surface, lamp type, UVB fixture, distance, mesh obstruction, and exposure zone all affect the result.

Choosing a UVB system

  • Use a suitable linear fluorescent system: The RSPCA guide describes a high-output 10–12% UVB tube with reflector.
  • Match lamp and fixture: Output depends on the complete combination, not only the percentage printed on the tube.
  • Follow distance guidance: Mesh and distance can reduce usable UVB; mounting too close can also be unsafe.
  • Plan replacement: Visible light does not prove that useful UVB output remains.
  • Create shade: Your dragon must be able to leave both heat and UV exposure.

Five first-owner mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying wattage by species name.Wattage alone cannot predict conditions in your enclosure.
  2. Separating heat and UVB.The dragon should receive both while using the primary basking zone.
  3. Reading air temperature only.Surface and ambient measurements answer different questions.
  4. Leaving colored lights on at night.Provide darkness; use non-light heat only when necessary.
  5. Forgetting lamp age.Record installation and planned replacement dates.
